Bible Resources and Reading Plans
One of the most important steps in walking with Jesus is reading the Bible. This is how we come to know God and His will for our life. To encourage you in this way, we want to recommend several plans and resources in the habit of bible reading.
YouVersion: This is a Bible App for your device. They provide numerous plans with creative resources that will encourage a new habit of reading your bible. You can choose be a 5-day plan, 30-day plan or 3-month plan or a year plan. You can even invite people to join you in a plan and collaborate on what you are learning.
Navigators 5x5x5 Plan. This plan is structured to help you read through the entire New Testament by reading 5 minutes a day, 5 days a week, and 5 ways to dig deeper. These are great bible reading tools no matter what plan you are using.
Read through the Bible in a Year: Here is a simple, straightforward checklist to read the bible 3-4 chapters at a time.
M’Cheyne Reading Plan: This is named after Robert Murray M’Cheyne, a Scottish pastor who organized a plan that helps you read the bible through once and the NT and Psalms twice in a year (or longer if you prefer). It has you reading in 4 different parts of the bible each day. You can also approach this with morning reading and evening reading.
A Good Study Bible: A very helpful companion to bible reading is a Study Bible. There are several good options. I recommend the ESV Study Bible.
The Bible Project: Great resources to help you understand the Bible.
More advice as you get started…
Start small and simple. Don’t make it too complicated.
Keep going. If you miss a day or two, don’t worry about it. Stopping completely will be of no benefit. Keep going.
Do this with others. It is always helpful to have a friend to join you in starting a new habit. This not only adds accountability, but brings joy and edification to all involved.
Pray. Read the bible is meeting with God. This is personal. He helps us understand. He wants you to grow. Invite his help.
