This is Valley

Our Story

Every church has a story and ours began in 1978 when a group of people began to meet together in homes for Bible Study and prayer on Sunday evenings in Haddam, a town situated along the Connecticut River Valley. In 1979 they connected with an association of churches called the Evangelical Free Church of America. They began regular Sunday gatherings for worship in 1980, and in 1981 they called their first pastor. In 1984, the church purchased a piece of property on Turkey Hill Road and began gatherings and ministry in a new building by 1986. Since then, a major addition was completed in 2005.

Rev. John Westerholm became the second pastor in January of 1990. Pastor John served as Senior Pastor at Valley for nearly three decades until November 2017. He remained on staff through April 2020 when he retired. Rev. Chad Hemphill became the Senior Pastor in 2018 after serving as the Associate Pastor since 2010.

Today Valley Bible Church is a community of people who celebrate our hope in Jesus and bring that hope to those around us. Each Sunday we gather in Haddam to worship, coming from numerous towns along the Southern Connecticut River Valley. These towns range from Cromwell to Old Lyme and from Colchester to Durham. Our aim continues “to be and make disciples of Jesus”, both here in our own community as well through initiatives that reach people all over the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ. As in our beginnings, we believe this is most effectively done in smaller communities we call Life Groups where we do life and mission together. Every generation helping the next generation anchor their hope in Jesus.

“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Jesus in Matthew 28:19-20

Our Values

We make disciples by. . .

Gathering in worship and loving community,

Growing in Christ-like character,

Going into the world to do good deeds and bring good news

We believe that it is Jesus’ design for his church to be, grow and serve in community. Therefore, disciples of Jesus Christ glorify God by gathering in worship and in loving community with one another.

Believing that Jesus’ church will grow because it is alive…disciples of Jesus Christ glorify God by intentionally learning and putting into practice the teachings of Scriptures in order to live a life that is worthy of the gospel, becoming more like Jesus Christ.

Believing that Jesus’ commission for his church is to bring the message of the gospel to all nations, tribes, languages and peoples…disciples of Jesus Christ glorify God by going into the world to bless to all people with the good news and to demonstrate the gospel through good works, both locally and globally.
